Description:
This is a superb pair of early 20th c. Late Meiji/early Taisho black Kutani vases. At one point, the vases were converted to lamps and have been drilled. The vases are decorated with a black matt glaze beautifully painted and detailed in gold. The decoration features the peonies and birds in trees. The black and gold detailing of the vases reminds me of very fine japanese lacquer work. The vases are in overall very good to excellent condition, with normal wear for their age and use. The vase will be fitted with my ususal top-notch electrical fittings and a simple footed black base.
