Description:This is an unusual and highly decorative Ashanti Stool from Ghana. The stool features a carved turtle and carved snail positioned on either side of the seat. The seat itself is supported by a roughly carved human figure. At some point in its life, the stool was damaged and now sports a thin tin strip to secure the old restoration. I love seeing these old restoration as it is an indication of the value that the owner placed on the chair. The Ashanti stools were kept by their owners throughout his lifetime and it is believed that upon the death of the owner, his soul resides in his chair. (I personally have a chair addiction, but I really do not want my sould to residein a chair after death!!!--but that's just me). This stool would be a strong decorative element.
