18th Century Peruvian Painting of The Holy Family

$4,400.00

This is a very good example of a Peruvian, possibly Cuzzzco, painting of the Holy Family that dates to the mid or late-18th century. The Holy Family is depicted as under the protecting arms of God-the-Father, three Angeles and the Holy Spirit, as represented by the Dove with outstretched wings. The painting is in relatively good original, unrestored condition and is mounted on board. St Joseph is holding a lily that signifies Mary's immaculate conception; the lily also represents St. Joseph’s chastity and the Resurrection of Jesus. The frame is not original. Peru considers its religious paintings as "patrimonio nacional" or national treasures and no longer permits the export of this type of paintings which are, therefore, becoming increasingly difficult to acquire.
